Bogata, Texas

Jonelle

June 23, 1936 ... A small boy leaned against his father's leg and watched intently as the man's large hands, adept at swinging hammers, steering plows and combing a young boy's hair, tried awkwardly to create an opening in the bundle of blankets.

Oh! A baby! Was it real?

The boy's non-too-clean finger nudged the incredible softness of a tiny hand. His blue eyes flew to his father's face as the investigating finger was quickly trapped within his new sister's grasp.

Smiling, the man pulled his son closer.

For long enchanted moments a stillness held them as surely as if a photographer had captured the pose on paper. The infant, so new she had not yet been named, lying safe within the crook of Daddy's arm while holding tightly to her brother ...

The boy, pressing his sturdy body harder against his father's khaki clad knee, studied the miniature fingers that seemed intent upon claiming his hand forever.

It is now June 23, 2009. That long-ago daddy left this world more than twenty years ago. Hundreds of miles separate brother from sister.
Still ... she clings to his hand.
