Honey Gail and Jayma arrived about 6:30PM with homemade fudge and cookies. Karen and Austin breezed in at 7:00 with one beautiful yellow squash fresh from the garden. By 7:30 they were all gone again ... heading for Karen's house where they planned to watch some reality show called "The farmer takes a wife" scheduled to come on at 8:00. Our phone rang at 8:15. They were returning to our house immediately ... Had to watch the show here ... TV wasn't working properly at Karen's. Okay. Phillip left the Red Sox behind and went in search of the farmer. One possible bride-to-be was milking goats when Karen, Austin, Honey and Jayma came tumbling back in our door.
Everybody settled in ... Six of us huddled together in one room ... Waiting to see which girl the farmer would choose. He'd been thinking it over for weeks, they said. Had ten possibilities to begin with. Weeded them down to two. Tonight was the tie-breaker. The loser would be going back to New York City. The winner would remain on the farm and be forever grateful to the handsome farmer for allowing her to gather his eggs and slop his pigs. Or maybe the winner was going to New York and the loser would gather and slop ... I'm not sure. I got a little confused there.
Twenty minutes away from the big moment, Phillip, needing privacy, ran us out of the living room. Honey and Karen fell all over each other getting the small bedroom TV turned on, only to discover a glitch ... a black splotch was covering most of the screen on the farmer's station. We watched around the edges ... saw the top of this girl's hair-do ... saw the tip of that girl's fingernails ... got a glimpse of handsome's right eyebrow ... Then, Phillip gave the "all-clear" signal and we made the same mad dash - in reverse - back to the good TV. Whew!
The last ten minutes were watched with no interruptions.
Winner cried. Loser cried. Farmer's eyes looked damp. I was exhausted.
My daughters will be back tomorrow morning to hang wallpaper. I hope I'm alive to see it.
