Once ...

She removes the snapshot gently from its safe place and smoothes the frayed edges with one crippled finger.  It's faded now ... this image of youth ... snapped with a Kodak camera ... way more than half-a-century ago.

Or maybe it isn't faded ... maybe it's her failing eyesight that makes it impossible to see the boy and girl clearly ...

Or tears ...

It could be tears.

They were happy that day on the mountain ... holding hands and laughing with relief.  She'd lost his high school ring earlier ... the bulky layers of adhesive tape wound around the back had failed to keep the large ring safe on her slender finger.   A few heart-stopping moments went by before it was found and returned to its rightful place.

That long-ago boy and girl, once standing side-by-side to face a shared beginning, vanished several decades ago.

Now, as her not-quite-steady hand returns the treasured memory  to its storage space on a back shelf, she hears, as though from a great distance,  the gentle breeze, whispering through mountain pines.
