Crisis in West Virginia ...
Front page headlines ... West Virginia man arrested for keeping two deer in his home!
He'd had them a long time ... My guess would be that he found two motherless fawns, took them to his house until he could figure out what to do with the helpless little things and bonding happened before a solution was found.
The picture accompanying those headlines showed one deer standing calmly in the wide open doorway, looking for all the world like a small child waiting patiently for "Daddy" to finish talking to the man and come on back inside.
It would be funny if it weren't so sad.
Doesn't the government have more important things to do than harass a man for harboring deer?
I wonder how many times our family broke the law when my five children were growing up ... The only thing that wasn't brought into our house was a deer.
Cats and dogs came in droves ... some by invitation ... most, illegally lured in, dragged in, sneaked in by Carmen. No four-legged animal was too big or too dirty to find loving sanctuary beneath her bed or inside her closet.
In addition to those ordinary pets, we had turtles, birds, mice, gerbils, rabbits, chickens, ducks, squirrels, coons and once, and only once, Tony captured a snake and kept it stored out back in the shed in a big jar with holes in the lid.
Those holes never looked small enough to suit me.
